About this metric

freight miles by mode

The distance travelled by freight, like FedEx deliveries or the mail, using different transportation modes (e.g. trucks, planes, trains, etc.). It takes into account the freight demand of an area, based on how many people live, work, and visit the area and the different types of uses in that area, as well as the average freight shipment distance, average delivery size, and freight capacity. This metric is broken down by freight mode and is reported in vehicle miles.

Freight miles by mode = deliveries and pickups * proportion of freight trips * average freight shipment distance * average delivery size / freight capacity

Depends upon:

—Parameters: average delivery size, average freight shipment distance, freight capacity and proportion of freight mode by fuel

—Other metrics: deliveries and pickups
